As the World Turns

Living here in the NEK can make you react very strangely to the seasons: where most would view the turning from spring to summer as a plus, you have to admit it's the beginning of a slow, inevitable slide...Because, after all, it is all downhill from here until the winter solstice. Every day will get darker, just a little bit.

A sort-0f-boyfriend [and sort-of-friend, as it turns out] once expressed amazement at the fact that no matter what time of year it was, when people with our Vermont backwoods roots got together, we always talked as if winter was just around the corner.

Which, indeed, it was. Never have I been so cold as I was in Lost Nation. I hope to never be so cold again.

The other side of this is the flash of understanding that comes after one of those horrendous winters. It's "Summertime, and the living is easy." No wood to haul, no fires to keep going, no ice to break through to get water, no snow to shovel, no cars to start at 40 below, no chains to put on to get up the hill. Even thought I've left a lot of that behind, I can still really appreciate all that summer brings.

So tonight, at 7:59 p.m. EDT, the season turns. And even though all the light we're enjoying will slowly begin to fade as the summer progresses, I plan to enjoy it and the warmth it brings.
